We wish to rutcr our protest against the custom of our merchants here, of keeping open their stores Saturday nights until midnight or very "ear f time hour. If the merchants of War renton would have some concert of ac tion about their cloning hours, then: would not be a single copper lost by any merchant in Wari tnion. In our opinion i t is decidealy wrong to keep the Etoies open so late, and we will give some of the reasons we have for Caving so: 1st. the clerks and proprie tors are injured physically by tiiesn late hours. Those hot summer nights, a store thoroughly lighted by lamps is an exceedingly hot place and unheal thy. 2nd. The store people are ru- dered unfit to serve (lou the next day. T the -Lord s djy, acceptably when re- quired to stand in those hot st ro nxm3 till midnight on Satin-days, lth l:e- cause of loss of sleep and tho breath ing of the impure air in the stores at night. 3rd: By keeping open the stores and places of business till Saturday at midnight, proprietors and clerks i-re induced to violate the Sabbath. Ma ny are an hour or two after midnight closing up the days work or in getting homo and preparing for the Sabbath and retiring for the night. Tho conse quence is the next morning, tho blcs sed Sabbath, thos who are thus kept up late neglect the service of God in his sanctuary and are at home nsieep and recuperating from the Saturday night's excessive work and loss of slfep. Gentlemen, lets put a stop to this. Make an figroerneut to close up prompt ly at 9, o'clock every Saturday night aud not one of yon will loose a cent, all of yon will be better off and better pre pared to pay the respect due by eacli one of you, to Gods holy day and to his delightful services in tho Sabbath Schools and church services. If the merchants cannot agree to do this among themselves we really think that the citizens of the town ought to get up a petition to our town commiss ioners asking thorn l: pass a tewn or dinance requiring all stores and busi ness houses to be closed at 0 o'clock at night. Wo know several owns that have sucli a:i ordinance and they are prosporou s to wns It is a shame and an outlaw, and we hope that our business men will see the propriety, and reasonableness of the proposition to close at an early hour, and not force us to apply for releif through our city fathers.
